Cicero on thinking

December 6, 2009

This spurred some thoughts;

“To live is to think”.
– Marcus Cicero, Roman Statesman.

I don’t quite follow this view. Thinking is helpful and sometimes joyful, but it’s important to allow the brain some rest once in a while. Take a walk in the woods – and ease out of thought and language for a few hours. It feels so healthy and natural, and gives you a simple and relaxed day.

The notion of thinking equals living is common in western philosophy, but it creates a lot of fatigue in younger brains. The habit of thinking too much and too often is wide-spread. Relax more and have some fun. You don’t really need that much thinking to have a happy life. It’s a nice tool, for its use.
